A Note from Pastor Rich
April 23, 2000
Someone was recently looking into a biographical directory of Nobel Prize recipients. Among the information provided for each grantee was religious affiliation. For James Watson, discoverer of the structure of the DNA molecule, the paragraph said simply, "Religion: probably Christian."
Wouldn't that be a sad way to describe our faith, "Probably Christian?" Should they really have to guess? It seems to me that if the life of God is in our lives then there ought to be evidence of that fact. What is the effect of our faith? The result should be seen in every area of our lives. We should be a different kind of husband, a different kind of wife, our families should be different, our work should be different, God's principles should be evident in our decision making.
How should all these things be different? The character of Christ should be seen in all we do. We should be people who speak gracious words, who are willing to serve others with humility, who don't blow a fuse at every small offense. There are many more ways to describe the effect of Christ in our lives, but the key to it all is in that last phrase-Christ in our lives. I pray that each of us will open our hearts as never before to the Lord.
Only by being in His presence will we be changed. What we desire is to be like Christ. The key then, is to be with Christ. As you move along on your faith journey through life, will people say about you, "Probably Christian"? Will they have to guess? Or will they know?
Your Servant,
Rich
