Calvary Distinctives

Calvary Chapel is a non-denominational Church in cooperative affiliation with Calvary Chapel Outreach Fellowships of Costa Mesa, California. We share a common doctrinal foundation and philosophy of ministry.

Worship is contemporary and casual. Our emphasis is on corporate participation rather than individual performance. Our focus is on a personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

The messages are distinctly Biblical. We teach through the Bible, book by book, chapter by chapter. Our goal is to be practical, and to equip Christians for life and ministry.

We love people. You will not find elaborate buildings, ornate furnishings, or an emphasis on pomp and splendor at Calvary. The Church is people.

There is no dress code. You will discover that folk come to Church in casual or more formal attire, depending on their personal preference.

We include folk from all walks of life. We target no particular demographic in the community, and we exclude none.

We have a heart for youth. We accept kids however they come to us. Our Sunday School and youth ministries build Biblical values in an age appropriate manner.

Statement of Faith

Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such, only to their over-emphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the Body of Christ.

We believe the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ's (Agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess, and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.

We believe worship of God should be spiritual. Therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.

We believe worship of God should be inspirational. Therefore, we give great place to music in our worship.

We believe worship of God should be intelligent. Therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis upon the teaching of the Word of God that He might instruct us how He should be worshipped.

We believe worship of God should be fruitful. Therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have been truly worshipping Him.

We believe in all the fundamental doctrines of orthodox evangelical Christianity.

We believe in the inerrancy of Scripture. The Bible, both the Old and New Testaments are the inspired, infallible Word of God.

We believe that God is eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe that God the Father is the personal, transcendent, and sovereign Creator of all things.

We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human, that He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His vicarious death on the Cross, was bodily resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit, ascended back to the right hand of God the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for us.

After Jesus ascended to Heaven, He poured out His Holy Spirit on the believers in Jerusalem, enabling them to fulfill His command to preach the Gospel to the entire world, an obligation shared by all believers today.

We believe that all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all his/her sins are forgiven, and that person becomes a child of God, destined to spend eternity with the Lord.

We believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures, and that they are valid for today if they are exercised within the Scriptural guidelines. We as believers are to covet the best gifts, seeking to exercise them in love that the whole Body of Christ might be edified. We believe that love is more important than the most spectacular gifts, and without this love all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless.

We believe that church government should be simplistic rather than a complex bureaucracy, and we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead, rather than on fleshly promotion.

We await the pre-tribulation rapture of the church, and we believe that the second coming of Christ with His saints to rule on the earth will be personal, pre-millennial, and visible. This motivates us to holy living, heartfelt worship, committed service, diligent study of God's Word, regular fellowship, and participation in adult baptism by immersion and Holy Communion.

We seek to teach the Word of God in such a way that its message can be applied to an individual's life, leading that person to greater maturity in Christ.

Ron Smith, Senior Pastor

Ron Smith was born in Burlington, Washington. He was raised on a farm in Mt. Vernon, Washington. He learned his work ethic on that farm. He came to know Christ at an early age and by his late teens was committed to serving the Lord in the ministry. He began preaching in his teens.

Upon High School graduation he attended Seattle Bible College where he spent three years in the intense study of God's Word. Those studies set the standard for his ministry of teaching through the Bible.

In 1973 Ron was called to pioneer a Church in Eastern Washington. He was there for two years establishing the fellowship. During those years he worked full time as a journeyman meat cutter to support his family and ministry.

Late in 1975 he was called to Pastor a Church in Tacoma, Washington. Then, in June of 1977 he moved to Tualatin, Oregon where he was an Assistant Pastor at Grace Community Church.

From Tualatin, Ron was called to McMinnville in June of 1984. He continues to serve Calvary Chapel as the Senior Pastor.

He has a passion to see the Word of God shared throughout the local community and has pioneered new works to accomplish this goal. He is a strong supporter of missions world wide.

Ron is married to Marleen, a very supportive Pastor's wife. He has three children and several grand-children.

For recreation, Ron enjoys planes, motorcycles and cars.

Michael Tremaine, Pastoral Intern

After making a decision for Christ on his first No Alternatives Bike Trip experience in 1999, Michael continued his walk with the Lord under the teaching of Wes Thomas and Dave Barnhart at Calvary Chapel McMinnville's No Alternatives youth ministry.

After graduating high school in 2004, Michael set his eyes on ministry. While helping Dave in the youth group, Michael ran a small skate ministry and enrolled at Calvary Chapel Bible College. He spent one year at the CCBC extension campus in McMinnville, one term at the main campus in Murrieta California in the Fall of 2005, and has spent the remainder of his Bible College studies at the McMinnville CCBC campus.

When Dave was called to the mission field, Pastor Ron asked Michael and Matt Hakola to fill the position as youth pastor interns. One year later, both Matt and Michael were offered more specific positions in the ministry, Matt with the high school and Michael with the middle school.

Matt Hakola, Pastoral Intern

Matt was born and raised in the local area and graduated from Dayton High School in 2002. He grew up in a small church setting and considered himself a Christian until he came to Calvary Chapel and was confronted with the power of the undiluted word of God and loving people. He dedicated his life to the Lord and his life has been an adventure ever since. He helped out with the youth group for a year, as the Lord was growing his heart in the area of world mission work.

Matt completed a Discipleship Training School through Youth With A Mission in Honolulu Hawaii in 2003, and upon his return began to get more involved as a leader in the youth ministry.

Not long after that Matt married his sweetheart, Amanda. His youth Pastor, Dave Barnhart, moved to Russia as a missionary, and Matt was called upon to lead the No Alternatives High School Youth Ministry as a pastoral intern.
